Rant: Why The Metro Version of Internet Explorer is Impractical

It’s no secret that I am not a fan of the new Windows 8 and the Metro interface. Yes it’s true, I am a power user. Some people say “well Windows 8 isn’t for power users,” and that I am in the minority. But some of my complaints I think go beyond being just a power user. Some of the issues I have, I truly believe make Windows 8 impractical to use on a desktop or laptop.

An example of this is the new Metro version of Internet Explorer that comes with Windows 8. I have a number of small issues that just simply make it harder to use on a desktop.

My first issue is the behavior of CTRL+L. As a power user, this is what I’m used to doing in any browser when I want to type in a new web site. In IE Metro, you still get this short cut, but it behaves quite a bit differently than I would expect. Instead of the address bar unhiding, you are whisked off to a separate page which includes a list of frequently visited and pinned sites.

I personally don’t like this behavior. Why can’t the address bar simply unhide so I can type a URL, without leaving the page I’m currently on? It just doesn’t feel comfortable.

Issues 2 and 3. The navigation experience in IE Metro just isn’t complete. It’s not intuitive to figure out how to switch back and forth between tabs. In fact, it wasn’t until I read an article on how to use IE Metro that I figured out how. You have to right click on the page, or press WIN KEY+Z.

I don’t understand why they couldn’t also map CTRL+L to the navigation as well, so that those of us who are used to this short cut would see something more along the lines of what we’re used to. And make the frequent sites window a different short cut.

Though this still doesn’t solve issues with the navigation. When you use the new WIN KEY+Z short cut to access the navigation, you would assume you could navigation the navigation controls from the keyboard right? Wrong. The navigation highlights the current tab you have open, but as for selecting a different tab, or even entering a new address, you have to use your mouse to click on the tab, or address bar.

It seems like it would make much more sense if CTRL+L opened the navigation directly to the address bar, rather than the separate page of frequent and pinned sites. And when using WIN KEY+Z, you could use the arrow keys on a keyboard to navigate and select a different tab. Instead you are forced to use the mouse to select a different tab, or to enter an URL for a new site.

Issue 4. In all previous versions of Windows, when you right click, you get a context menu that has such options as copy link, properties, view page source, or save image as. This doesn’t really exist in IE Metro. Right clicking on a page to bring up the navigation doesn’t seem right because it’s a vastly different behavior than ever before.

You can in fact right click on links still to copy the link, or open it in a new tab. But what if you wanted to save an image? Well that’s possible in IE Metro. Right clicking on an image doesn’t bring up a context menu with an option to save it. No, the navigation pops up instead. Why can’t I save an image on a web page in IE Metro? Even smartphones have a select mode where you can select an image to save it.

I’m finding it very difficult to understand why Microsoft has made Windows 8 the way it is. They want people to use Windows 8 and the new Metro interface on desktops and laptops right? But then they do things like I talked about above.

My parents save images from web pages all the time. My Mom especially who likes to save photos of her grand kids from Facebook.

So when Windows 8 comes out, I’ll have to tell her “oh you have to switch to desktop mode and use the version of IE there to save an image.” To say that this is only a problem for power users like myself is ridiculous. What happens if down the road Windows 9 comes out, and it doesn’t have a classic desktop mode?
